Before 1900 . . .

Eight years after the founding of the city - in 1878, to be exact - Modesto's first bank was organized. Called Modesto Bank, it was located in a gracefully arched building next to Ross House. It would later move to larger, more substantial quarters at 10th and I Streets, where its working clock tower displaced the non-working clock in the Tynan Hotel.

Modesto Bank - 1885. The bank is in the center, with Ross House on the eft and an interesting shop on the right - shades of Modesto's future, Lesher Bros. Modesto Wine Depot.

It wouldn't be until the mid-teens in the next century that Modesto's streets would finally be paved. As you can see, above, the sidewalks are wood planking and the streets are dirt.

Modesto Brewery - 1885. It may not have been St. Stan's, but whatever libation came from the Modesto Brewery, it was certain to quench the thirst of hot Modestans on a summer evening.
