Before 1900 . . . Eight years after the founding of the city - in 1878, to be exact - Modesto's first bank was organized. Called Modesto Bank, it was located in a gracefully arched building next to Ross House. It would later move to larger, more substantial quarters at 10th and I Streets, where its working clock tower displaced the non-working clock in the Tynan Hotel. | ||

It wouldn't be until the mid-teens in the next century that Modesto's streets would finally be paved. As you can see, above, the sidewalks are wood planking and the streets are dirt. | ||
