Modesto Snapshots: The Arch at Night

Modesto's centerpiece - the Arch as it appears with lights ablaze. This is a mid to late 1950s view. The buildings beyond the arch to the right are gone now - torn down in the downtown redevelopment frenzy of the 1960s. The site of the largest building, The Claremont Hotel, is still a parking lot. The arch also was repainted at one time to approximate the coppery color it originally had. The city takes care of replacing light bulbs.
