This photograph of the Hotel Modesto is from around 1937. The hotel, both a residence hotel and a place for visitors to stay, was one of Modesto's finest. Originally built in 1914, it was enlarged over the years and is shown here with all its additions, including the fifth floor. The hotel burned to the ground in May of 1944 when a fire started in a paint store on the first level. Two people were killed, including a sailor from the Crows Landing Naval Air Base. | ||
