This is a later photograph showing J Street between 10th and 11th Streets. The Hotel Hughson has now been joined by the Hotel Covell, which also housed the National Theatre (later renamed the Princess and then the Covell). This entire block of buildings was torn down in the late 1990s for the new 10th Street Plaza. Both the Hotel Hughson and Hotel Covell were, at one time, centerpieces in Downtown Modesto, before falling into disrepair. Although plans to refurbish them were often mentioned, they were never used again after the 1970s and 1980s. | ||
