The Arch has been Modesto's symbol since 1912. It weathered a move so that 9th Street could be widened, and it has outlived the buidings that once surrounded it. Banners have hung from it (as the 1954 photo with the All America City banner). Flags were proudly displayed from the arch after Sept. 11th, 2001. The time period of each photo can generally be determined by the type of vehicles in the photos.
